Endowed Chair in Demography
Applications Due: January 30, 2008 (for primary consideration; open until filled)

The Division of Social Sciences invites applications for an endowed chair in Demography. We seek an outstanding established scholar with a strong and demonstrated interest in the way demographic processes (fertility, mortality, morbidity and migration) and changes in population characteristics (size, distribution, and structure) are linked to social, cultural and economic processes.

Demographic research in the following areas will be considered: demographic perspectives on racial, ethnic, and gender inequality and opportunity; inequality, development and globalization; comparative studies; demographic approaches to stratification, education and occupation, including gender and work; intergenerational transmission (income, welfare, labor supply); the effects of the national and transnational flow of migrants on demographic composition and social and economic processes; population and the environment; demographic implications of family processes and structures; the effect of demographic trends, such as aging, on the life-course, health and psychological well being.

The successful candidate will have an active research program with some emphasis on population processes in a developing country context.  He or she will also be using, or actively developing, advanced methods of mathematical or statistical demography in their research. The appointment is at the level of a full professor and the home department can be anthropology, economics or sociology. There is also a strong desire to find a candidate who is willing to work across disciplinary lines and to bring existing population researchers on campus together. The Chair carries with it a generous endowment for support of the chair holder’s research and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to help develop and establish an already endowed Center in Demography. The Division is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.

Applications received before January 30, 2008, will receive full consideration, although the position will remain open until filled.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, samples of recent publications, and list of three references to:
