Eligibility

The National Science Foundation identifies students who are underrepresented in the social sciences as "groups that historically have been underrepresented in the STEM disciplines: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Pacific Islanders."

Prospective underrepresented students who are committed to pursuing a Ph.D. in a participating social science department may apply for a fee waiver (.pdf) when submitting an application online through the UCSB Graduate Division portal.

Prospective students who have participated as a McNair Scholar, California State University Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar, Ralph Bunche Political Science Summer Institute Scholar or an American Economic Association Summer Training and Minority Fellow are strongly encouraged to apply.
