Melvin L. Oliver, Dean of Social Sciences, receives the Hayward Derrick Horton Award from the Critical Demography Association for outstanding scholarship in Critical Demography. At the Annual Meetings of the Association of Black Sociologists in Las Vegas in August, Melvin L. Oliver received the award. Critical Demography is an approach that makes explicit the manner in which the social structure differentiates dominant and subordinate populations. He is the second recipient (Tukufu Zuberi, The Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations, University of Pennsylvania was the first recipient in 2009).
